There are several things about this book I loved. It was a great insight to what challenges young girls and women faced in the eighteenth century. While reading I could not help but think this is what women who walked before me faced. We are certainly blessed today to have more freedom of choice and acceptance in what our talents are and what path they may take us on. I enjoyed the defiance Lisette felt toward the world who did not accept a female painter and the control her step father tried to take over her. I felt victorious with her when she would overcome an obstacle and felt the frustration when she ran into roadblocks. I am quite intrigued by the occurences that have taken place to put Lisette on the path to becoming the Queen's Painter. I look forward to reading the next two books!
I really liked this story because I like history and art. The author does such a fantastic job of describing all of the scenery and the grand houses. I felt like I was there. This is the story of Lisette, who wants to paint more then anything in the world. Despite many obstacles, created by the society she lives in and her father, she never gives up. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
This book is an intriguing tale of the art community in 18th Century Paris. The story moves quickly and was surprisingly suspenseful as you cheer for Lisette to be successful in her goal to be accepted into this male dominated world of artists. Characters are clearly drawn and believable. The story line never lags and when you aren't reading you feel anxious to get back to Becoming Lisette. Obviously this book is meticulously researched and so skillfully told you feel a part of the story as it unfolds.
Will be so excited to read the next book in the series!
I love a good historical novel, I love reading about interesting women in history, and I love to learn about new things - so this novel totally fit the bill for me! "Becoming Lisette" was that great combination I am always searching for - lots of interesting detail and context about a historical setting combined with an interesting and suspenseful plot. The fact that I knew nothing about Lisette Vigee prior to reading this novel was an added bonus as I like to feel that I am educating myself even while reading fiction. Kudos to the author for taking just the right angle in providing an amazing amount of detail about the work and craft of a painter of this era and the environment she was in, while still keeping the plot moving and suspenseful. I thoroughly enjoyed this work and look forward the next in the series!
I was really looking forward to reading this. I love this time period and what interested in reading about Vigee-Lebrun. But I have to admit I was a little disappointed. Now it's not like I've studied up on Vigee-Lebrun so I can't say if what was depicted in the novel actually happened, but there were parts of the plot seemed kind of contrived--no plot spoilers! I kept thinking I would see something like this in a lame made-for-tv movie. And the so-called "romance" element was totally unbelievable. The writing was adequate but not enough to make me feel emotionally involved with the characters. It wasn't a bad novel, just kind of "eh".
I got this book from Patrice M. as a gift. I loved it and wanted to write a review. The author's skillful weaving of fiction and well-researched historical fact results in an entertaining and informative read. It is the story of a talented young woman's struggle in eighteenth century Paris to become a recognized and respected artist in a world resolved to reject her. I was sorry to turn the last page and look forward to the next two books in this most interesting trilogy.
I started to give this four stars but it held my interest to the end and now I cannot wait until Book 2 is available. I've always been interested in Vigee LeBrun and here at last was a well-written autobiographical novel! There were times the believability factor was stretched... e.g., Did her hands really have a "mind of their own?" How did she manage to escape the watchful eye of her stepfather so often, even going out at night? And I found a common mistake that unfortunately is repeated several times in the last chapter. "Chaise-longue" is often misspelled as "chaise-lounge" but I'd have thought her editors would have caught that. Minor things, and certainly not enough to detract from the fact that this is a very good book! The descriptions of 18th Century French surroundings are superb.
