This book is just awful. I gave up after reading just 70 pages. It literally is a "time waster" and a "life suck". If you love Koontz books as I do, skip this one. It's so odd that he can write such great books as Odd Thomas and Sole Survivor and then turn out some shlock like this one, but I've found that happens--he writes about one dud in every 5 books or something like that. In short, don't waste your time or money and buy one of his newer books. This ain't worth your time!Tags : Amazon.com: By the Light of the Moon (9780553582765): Dean Koontz: Books,Dean Koontz,By the Light of the Moon,Bantam,0553582763,Thrillers - General,Artists;Fiction.,Brothers;Fiction.,Psychics;Fiction.,Artists,Brothers,Fiction,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,Fiction Thrillers General,Fiction-Thriller,General Adult,KOONTZ, DEAN R. By the Light of the Moon Dean Koontz Books Reviews
Mr Koontz twists and turns thrills as no other. Always at least one character that enters your heart and another that scares the poop out of you. I hope there becomes a sequel to this as his characters are truly unforgettable. Mr Koontz should as well take responsibility for my sleep deprivation due to reading as much as I acquire oxygen.
I have to say I enjoyed "By the Light of the Moon." I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a STUPENDOUS job narrating Dylan, Shep and Jilly. The plot? Dylan is staying at a hotel when a wacky and deranged doctor injects Dylan with a mysterious liquid he calls only 'stuff.' The stuff, he says has the ability to change a person into something better...Or destroy him. When Dylan manages to escape the doctor, he is joined by another hotel guest who has also been injected. Together they flee mysterious generic bad guys across the country.
I liked this Koontz novel mostly because it had more of a science fiction flair and less of a horror flavor which I rather liked. Also, there were no dogs, and better still, no body-part collecting serial killers. Thank you, Mr. Koontz! I like variety, and this book was both appealing because of its lack of gratuitous gore, and thought provoking, because of the message. The only thing I didn't like? What happened to the doctor at the end....And...Also...At times Shep's repetitiveness got old. Especially in the narrated version, when you couldn't easily skip the words...I think Shep must've said "Ice and Cake" at least two-hundred times.... 5 Star effort. Only surpassed by Fear Nothing.
I just relistened to this at work. I have to say that this is one of my favorite Koontz books. I love the relationship Dylan has with his damaged brother, Skip. Jillian drove me nuts during the beginning of this book. However, as the story continued, and she dropped her guard to become a more tolerant and nicer person, I came to like her quite a bit. Watching the characters develop and change due to the circumstances in which they found themselves was a joy. The story made me laugh, gasp, and left me feeling happy and hopeful. And to this date, I still refer to Goldfish crackers as "shapey". )
Deen Koontz is undoubtedly my very favorite author. I spent most of today finishing this book so I could get started on the newest Odd Thomas book released just yesterday. This story about 3 people ending up at the same motel in Arizona, going in opposite directions. Dylan O'Conner and his autistic brother Shepherd heading east, and Jilly Jackson and her green Jade plant she called Fred heading west to new job life challenges. All of them were over taken by a mad scientist and injected with nanobots and the changes they caused them to go through. The scientist, a mad and evil man actually gives these 3 a special sense and way of doing things that are good, against evil. This story was a bit different from other Koontz books I have read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the different talents they came up with being infected with these nanobots and the amazing things they could do because of them. I see this as a good book for those who like to read this wonderful author and will enjoy it immensely.

I have been a fan of Dean Koontz books since some time in the mid 1980's and found myself grabbing each new read as it came out. This summer I decided to re-read some of the books to refresh my memories.
By the Light of the Moon was one of those delightful and surprising books. The "surprise" was never quite figuring out the doctor's motivation and in particular why he picked Dylan and Shep initially to carry on his "life's work". As more details are revealed so is the connection. Each of the three main characters Dylan, Shep and Jillian have been injected with a secret serum and it has a different effect on each of the characters. By working as a team the three are able to develop strategies that help them to avoid being caught by the "government men" who want to get their hands on this serum. Shep is autistic and yet his "power" seems to be the most unusual and magnificent of the three, a real gift. Jilly, a total stranger to Dylan and Shep until that strange night when they were injected, becomes a real part of the "family". She has wonderful patience with Shep and his actions related to his autism. In addition, Koontz does a great job of exploring autism and showed me what it must be like to live with and be responsible for an autistic family member. As Shep accepts Jilly as part of the "family" he grows and changes, and yet realistically is not "cured" of his autism. His gift does give him increased self-confidence and helps to go beyond his shyness to help the other two.
I really enjoyed the suspense of thinking I knew the doctor's motives, only to find that Koontz adds more to the story right up to the end.
I recommend this for all Koontz fans and for those who may not have tried Koontz, this is a great book with which to begin. Koontz is an author who explores the inner strength of characters and a belief in there being some goodness in humanity.
Evil scientist injects nanobots into three people and tells them to run, armed men are in pursuit. What!? Two brothers, i e an artist the other high functioning autistic. The third is a young woman who does stand up and her partner is a large jade plant. Lots of running forces their nanobots to do miraculous things. They manage to evade capture, eliminate lots of bad guys and do good deeds. This book does not meet the high standards set by Odd Thomas but it is an enjoyable read. The evil scientist gets taken care of.
This book is just awful. I gave up after reading just 70 pages. It literally is a "time waster" and a "life suck". If you love Koontz books as I do, skip this one.
