Inspector Witherspoon of the Metropolitan Police has solved more murder cases than anyone in the history of the force, but he is never quite sure how he manages to do it. Mrs. Jeffries, his housekeeper, manages more than his household - she and the household staff investigate the cases using their considerable connections, and along with Constable Barnes, she guides the Inspector to the proper conclusion. The books are set in Victorian London. In Mrs. Jeffries and the One who Got Away, the most recent release in the series, Alice Robinson is found strangled in Highgate Cemetary, with a newspaper clipping in her hand. Inspector Witherspoon is quickly called onto the case, as the clipping refers to his only investigation in which the main suspect was never apprehended. The case quickly becomes a difficult one for both the police and Mrs. Jeffries, but in the end, the household once again pulls through and Inspector Witherspoon makes the arrest.
The Mrs. Jeffries/Inspector Witherspoon series is one of those fun, easy reads for those who enjoy cozy mysteries. The series is well written and the plots show no signs of becoming banal, as with other authors on the 30th-plus book in their series. Although I figured out who the murderer was early on, I'd like to think it was not completely obvious. The clues were there, but they were not necessarily blatant clues, so one would have a chance to figure it out, but might not necessarily have done so.
I have not yet read all of the Mrs Jeffries series, but I enjoy them enough for light reading, and will definitely keep making my way through the series.

Mrs Jeffries and the One Who Got Away A Victorian Mystery Emily Brightwell 9780425268100 Books Reviews
The latest in this long-running Victorian mystery series by Emily Brightwell is excellent. As always, Mrs. Jeffries and the other members of Inspector Witherspoon's household help investigate the murder case he has been assigned, all without his knowledge. If you've never read a "Mrs. Jeffries" novel, that may sound silly, but it's actually charming and seems believable the way this premise is handled by Brightwell. New readers can definitely pick up this book and quickly sort out all of the characters and enjoy this delightful cozy mystery.
Fans of the series will be glad to see all members of the household are actively investigating and contribute to the resolution of the murder. This time there is a bit of a twist, because the murder victim is known to the household and to say she is disliked would be an understatement. It's interesting to see Mrs. Jeffries and the others put aside their personal feelings toward the victim and work hard toward seeing that justice is done anyway.
This is one of my favorites of the newer books in this series. "Mrs. Jeffries and the One Who Got Away" is definitely a keeper!
I know many many like this book,; I do not understand why. The narrative doesn't flow, it meanders. There are more characters than even Dickens would drop into the bucket . . .and Ms Brightwell is no Dickens. An interesting plot premise goes nowhere; this is a short tory dramfoogled out to 300 pages with none of the purported 'detectives' (who I could not tell apart, nor cared to) in essence doing nothing; the plot denoument comes about without the help of anyone but the killer. And the feel is about as evocative of the Victorian era as a James Bond novel. And, Ms Brightwell, the terms 'hung' and 'hanged' are quite different. The letter is a sentence; the former is an anatomical description that I am sure you do not intend.
The Mrs. Jeffries mystery series is set in Victorian London, where the good Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is aided by his devoted staff and a growing circle of friends, led by the cleverly intuitive housekeeper. The good inspector is unaware of their help, as are his superiors, but we, the readers love dear Gerald Witherspoon and go along with the ruse and find ourselves rising to his defense as well. The books can be read out of sequence, but as one reviewer noted, in this case, the "One Who Got Away" was in an earlier book. However, the background is clearly outlined in this book, and all the clues are there for the reader to discover along with the Witherspoon household.
In this book, the inspector needs to solve the murder of the murder suspect who got away from him (in Mrs. Jeffries Sweeps the Chimney). The inspector, Constable Barnes, Mrs. Jeffries and the household and friends have "mixed" feelings about finding the murder suspect but their search for justice prevails.
(If you haven't read Mrs. Jeffries Sweeps the Chimney - and you plan to - you may want to read it first as this book will tell you "who done it". But it is not necessary to read that book before you read this book; there's enough "background" info so you wouldn't miss anything if you hadn't read "Sweeps the Chimney" or if you did & forgot what happened.)
I found this new book to be just as strong & enjoyable as all of the other books in the Mrs. Jeffries series (I think this makes 33 books in the series). The books are very well written and an easy read. Ms. Brightwell's descriptions, and the way the conversations are written, I can just picture what the people look like - whether upper class, working man, or street urchin. The books take place in Victorian England. This is my favorite book series. Very enjoyable and I highly recommend. I preordered the book over a year ago - it was worth the wait. I just hope the series continues.
